St. Mark's Church in Perotte
According to the local oral tradition, St. Mark's was built in 1834. "The deed for the Church property was obtained in 1842 when James Spurr deeded the property with the following proviso …a seat for himself and family near the pulpit be reserved free of rent forever to James Spurr and family."
It was the very same James Spurr also gave materials for the church, and was its builder.
"The most striking architectural detail is the central projecting entranceway with its hipped-roof bell tower with a cruciform spire featuring a repeated Neo-classical triangular pediment over the front entrance. The church bell, originally in service on a Dominion Atlantic Railway locomotive, “The Owl”, continues to ring from the bell tower." HistoricPlaces.ca
A Mapannapolis volunteer, Denise J. Rice, researched and photographed the churches and cemeteries of Annapolis County and then published a book. Her work, including original research by Dr. Alan Marbles, was then translated into an interactive map---part of the Mapannapolis.ca on-line collection.
