River of history
A river is more than an amenity, it is a treasure.
-Oliver Wendell Holmes
Named Rivière du Dauphin, in honour of the heir to the French throne, today's Annapolis River has history of its own going back hundred of millions of years.
Between the Triassic period basaltic North Mountain and the Devonian period South Mountain granite batholith, the River flows 142 kilometres falling just 40 metres over the distance. At Bridgetown it begins to meander gently.
This meandering river increased valuable river frontage in a time when rivers were the only highways. Witness this loop in the River at Round Hill: there has been farming here for almost 400 years. The first European arrivals, after dyking and draining the salt marshes, intensively farmed along the River.
