Port-Royal Journal 37- so many Pierres.

Ruisseau des Loups-Marins

Pierre Comeau was born around 1658 and was nicknamed Loup-Marin, probably because his brother and father were also called Pierre. It helped avoid confusion!

Loup marin is an older French word for seal and literally means sea wolf. The modern French word is phoque.

Pierre was called Le Loup-Marin. Why did he have this nickname? Could it be that he had some traits of seals? His father was nicknamed l’Esturgeon, the Sturgeon. Were they a family that fished or hunted seals? Or did something happen at Loups-marins Brook?

This brook, not far from Pierre Comeau’s house, was where Pierre Thibaudeau built his sawmill and flour mill.

Both mills were powered by the waters of the brook. Le ruisseau des Loups-marins flows into the Annapolis River just on the downstream side of the large meander in the river that was called Prée-Ronde and today is known as Round Hill.

The Port Royal Journal is a series dedicated to revealing the stories of everyday life in the community.
