Neighbours

On the north shore of the big meander of Dauphin River in Belle-Isle, René Martin, Pierre Gaudet, and Germain Savoie were neighbours. Their farms were built in a line above the flood plain and dyked lands and just to the west of the modern road that goes to the Belleisle Marsh conservation area.

Think about life on the river back then. Seeing the smoke rise from your neighbour’s chimney, meeting up from time to time, repairing the shared dykes, helping in times of need, children marrying each other, mourning together, knowing each others grandparents, swimming in the river, harvesting apples together…

MapAnnapolis’ interactive story map lets you learn about your ancestors’ neighbours. What does it tell you about daily life in the Port-Royal area?

The Port Royal Journal is a series dedicated to revealing the stories of everyday life in the community.
