For millennia, here where the estuary becomes a river, it was known an The Place of Bountiful Fish.

When the French, the Scots, and the British first arrived here, they all called it something different:

Port-Royal, Charles Fort, Annapolis Royal.

What each really wanted was to call it …ours.

With the Europeans at odds over control, it was a place of abundant conflict.
