Taking its inspiration from the Mi’kmaw word meaning ‘when they arrived’, Beyond Oqwa’titek, is a series of educational and cultural events that will mark Mi’kmaw and early Scottish contact, and the later arrival of the Gaels.

On this 400th Anniversary of the Charter of Nova Scotia (New Scotland), we’ll explore our colonial past in the spirit of “A Dialogue of Place and Diversity.”

Reflecting upon the impact and the legacy of colonialism particularly on Indigenous and early European settler communities, we’ll celebrate the unique cultural diversity of the peoples who’ve inhabited these lands over time.

Archaeology helps us understand the people and places from which we have come. The Mapannapolis Garrison Graveyard experience underlines that. But a new archaeology is emerging, one extending its value by building a foundation for future generations
