This Old House in Hillsburn

This photo, courtesy of June (Hamilton) Folks, shows some of her Halliday family members in the early 1940s alongside a hen.

Hillsburn, under the red pin, sits atop the North Mountain. On a clear day, across the Bay of Fundy the Port of Saint John, in neighbouring province of New Brunswick 45 km away, can be seen. To the west, the island of Grand Manan, and Eastport, Maine, the easternmost city in the United States.

This house on the Shore Road, in Hillsburn was built around the time of the Confederation in 1867. June Folks grandmother lived in this house at one time and left a note when she was a child inside one of the closet doors. The note, more than 100 years old now, is still there.

The North Mountain, a 200 million year old landscape feature, formed when Nova Scotia was in the middle of the super continent Pangea and the Atlantic Ocean was just forming. The red-outined area shows the extent of the basalt flooding that occurred when Pangea began to split apart. More about that here.

This picture taken in 2022 shows how the road was altered over time from the 1940s to today with the small hill on the road being leveled out.

Our thanks to Brenda Thompson for the story and the HIllsburn photographs.
