The marriage of Catherine Joseph and Jean Comeau.

Catherine Joseph married Jean Comeau on January 7, 1720. She was a Mi’kmaq and the daughter of François Joseph and Jeanne LeJeune. Jean was an Acadian. He was a widower and was previously married to Françoise Hébert. Catherine herself had an Acadian mother and a Mi’kmaq father.

Many Acadians are proud and intrigued by their Mi’kmaq ancestors. From the very beginning of Acadian history, the French and the Mi’kmaq seemed to have very cordial relations and that includes marriage. Genealogy provides us with an amazing way to reconnect with our ancestors. Beyond the simple information, we can go deeper. What was life like for this couple where indigenous and European lifestyles were coming together? We have no more information about Catherine and Jean, but descendants of the union of Acadie and Mi’kma’ki are numerous.

The Port Royal Journal is a series dedicated to revealing the stories of everyday life in the community.
