Walking Rover on the River
Two boys and their dog walking on the Annapolis River rather than on the streets of Annapolis Town.
While the Annapolis Basin didn't freeze over, here where the River is just 1300 feet wide…you can see for yourself. And at high tide! Our thanks for sharing this photo to the Annapolis Heritage Society.
Part of Annapolis Royals’ importance as a shipping centre was it’s high water wharves. The narrow Annapolis River where it passes the Town had swept away so much of the riverbed on the waterfront had made the tidal range here about 25-27 feet. As you can see above, a wooden two-master found wharfage in the heart of the Town.
This was the view from Granville Ferry, just across the River, and named to distinguish it from Lower Granville, Granville Beach, Granville Centre, and Upper Granville. Judging by the picture, it looks like the ferry from Granville Ferry wasn’t running, and folks had to walk into Town.
We’ve collected scrapbooks full of vintage picture postcards in a story-map: find it here.
